GOLF: IT IS said that all roads lead to Rome but Rome came to Ullesthorpe Golf Club as part of the club’s celebrations to welcome its new club Captains.

Resplendent in full Roman dress Cleopatra (Lady Captain Elaine Watkins), Mark Anthony (Club Captain John Cooper) and Maximus Decimus Meridius (Junior Captain Cameron Chalmers) attended by four handmaidens entered the club to fanfares and the delight of the many members present.

After the ‘Drive In’ everyone retired to the clubhouse for a celebratory glass of fizz. All the children present had great fun collecting the golf balls and were rewarded with

sweets for their efforts.

The Captains’ Drive In takes place every year on the first Sunday in April. Members eagerly await the event as the costumes chosen by the incoming Captains are kept a close secret.

LOCAL charities have received a major boost totalling £10,000 thanks to the efforts and generosity of members at Ullesthorpe Golf Club.

Lady Captain, Frances Farren’s, nominated charity, Bethany’s Wish, received £4,000, while Club Captain, Joe Maudlin, gave £4,000 to Diabetes UK.

Angela Polanco, from Bethany’s Wish said: “We work to support families, fund research and raise awareness of the 11 children every day who are diagnosed with cancer in the UK.

“This donation will enable us to ensure that more children can be cured and that families are supported.”

Joy Jones thanked Ullesthorpe Golf Club, saying: “Our vision is a world where diabetes can do no harm and we simply couldn’t work towards this vision without the support of people like the members at Ullesthorpe.”

A further £2,000 was donated to Zoё’s Place Baby Hospice from a club fundraising day ‘Pink Saturday’.

Eddie Jessiman from the Hospice, added: “At Zoё’s Place we believe that life is precious no matter how briefly it may last. We work round the clock for babies to help them make each day count.

“We couldn’t provide our much needed service without the generosity of people like Ullesthorpe Golf Club members.”
