FOR the sixth consecutive year Rugby’s 15-strong team finished in the top three at the 34th Rotary Disabled Team Championships in Coventry.
The event took place at the Xcel Centre and included no fewer than 13 sports, including rifle shooting, weight-lifting and swimming, spread across two days of competition.
Competitors gained points for their positions in each event which were added together to give the final result.
Rugby Sport for the Disabled performed admirably at the event despite not having as many players to choose from compared to other teams.
Three individual awards were presented to the darts team of Brian Kinzett and Dave Powers, to female learning difficulty table tennis star Anna Powers and weight-lifters Meilissa Mooney and Shauna Duffy.
Two members of the Rugby team were awarded trophies with Shauna Duffy impressing in the weight-lifting despite having been recovering in hospital for the last eight weeks following major surgery
Shauna was determined to compete and after bench pressing 95kg, she was presented with the Inner Wheel Club of Coventry Cup for endeavour.
Graeme Mooney entered the swimming at short notice and he swam 25 metres in 19 seconds and 100 metres in 2.25 minutes to receive the trophy for the greatest achievement.
For their efforts Rugby were awarded a cheque for £200 and team leader, Iris Bingham, said: “I told the Rugby team to do their best, but go and enjoy themselves. We certainly had a great team spirit.”
The Rugby Team would like to thank the Deputy Mayor for taking such an interest in RSDA and to the Rotary Club of Rugby Dunsmore who transported members to the event and for their assistance all weekend.
