Rugby Borough earn hard-fought pre-season draw against Racing Club Warwick

FOOTBALL: A WET Kilsby Lane greeted Rugby Borough on Tuesday night as they faced Midland Premier League Division One outfit Racing Club Warwick for their second pre-season friendly.

A corner in the fourth minute for Boro was headed wide by Joe Henderson, and after ten minutes both teams were knocking the ball about well on a slick surface.

Borough were enjoying possession, and in the 17th minute they took the lead as Sam Lockley scored in fourth goal in just two games after receiving support from Gerard Mcgahey throughout the build up.

The centre back partnership of Jamie Tank and Joe Henderson marshalled the back four well, but Racing Club Warwick drew level at 32 minutes after Robbie Stephenson cut in from the right and scored with a left foot strike from the edge of the box.

With the scores level at half time, Racing Club Warwick changed all their outfield players – and with a stronger 11 men, the county town side started to press for a second.

But it was Borough who took the lead on 68 minutes when Gerard Mcgahey scored following good hold up play by Sam Lockley.

Rugby then made several changes, but keeper Jack Farthing remained in fine form with a great save from a fizzing volley from the outside of the box.

Against higher league opposition, Rugby appeared to have weathered the storm.

But on 87 minutes, Racing drew level through a Ryan Billington goal.

The game ended in a draw – a fair result.

Rugby Borough are back in action on Saturday when they host Daventry Town.
