HOCKEY: RUGBY & East Warwickshire booked their place in the semi-final of the Vintage Plate competition thanks to a narrow 2-1 victory away at Charnwood Mountsorrel.
The club’s ‘vintage’ side opening the scoring after just 90 seconds thanks to a well taken goal by Richard Allen and soon enough they doubled their advantage when Guy Smith got his name of the scoresheet.
The visitors were very much on top but against the run of play Charnwood found a way back into the match when they pulled one goal back with 20 minutes played.
From then on both keepers at either end of the pitch were kept busy and the Charnwood shot-stopper in particular had a fine game, keeping his side in it right until the very end.
Rugby had their chances to seal the win comfortably but instead they kept their travelling supporters on tenterhooks right up until the final whistle to book their place in the final four.
