Rugby rally driver Morris hoping for better fortunes after tough start to new season

RUGBY rally driver Ashleigh Morris is preparing for the second round of the Motorsport News Circuit Rally Championship which takes place this Sunday at Cadwell Park near Louth.

Ashleigh and co-driver Jamie Mactavish had a challenging start to the season at Oulton Park.

They had a promising start to the day, finishing stage one third in their class, just seven seconds off the class lead.

But the pair were met with disappointment after their Ford Fiesta R200 wouldn’t go into gear after that stage and they were forced to retire due to clutch issues.

Ashleigh said: “The team did their best to fix the issues on the day and we were hoping we could miss a couple of stages then finish the rally, albeit with some significant time penalties, but unfortunately we needed to order new parts.”

After finishing the 2017/18 season second in Class B, this year the Ashleigh Morris Rallying team are hoping to go one better and win the class.

Competitors’ top seven scores of the championship count so the team are hoping for better luck for the rest of the season.

Ashleigh added: “Cadwell Park is one of my favourite venues.

“It’s referred to as the ‘mini Nurburgring’ so it’s a lot of fun to drive.

“I’ve competed here several times so we’re hoping for a good result this weekend and to put our last event behind us.

“We can drop our lowest score so we’re hoping things run more smoothly for the rest of the season.”
