OLD Laurentians just fell short in their attempt to produce a miraculous second-half comeback in a 28-21 defeat against Bourne.

Bourne raced into a 28-point lead inside the opening half an hour before tries from Wilf Sansum, Dan O’Brien and Nic Potgieter after the break kept Old Laurentians in the contest.

However, the home side were unable to strike again and came away with a solitary losing bonus point at Fenley Field.

And the result means Old Laurentians sit sixth in the Counties 1 Midlands East (South) table.

Bourne stunned the home side with a blistering start and quickly established a 28-point lead with four unanswered converted tries.

However, Old Laurentians responded after the interval as Sansum crossed to reduce the deficit and O’Brien kicked the conversion after sustained pressure on the Bourne line.

And O’Brien scored and converted a try of his own soon after with the returning Charlie Johnson unlucky to have a try chalked off moments earlier.

Old Laurentians closed the gap to a single score when Potgieter crossed after a powerful drive from the pack.

However, the home side were unable to score another try despite their best efforts as the Bourne defence held firm.

Old Laurentians are next in action away at Bugbrooke on Saturday, February 3 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Camp Close.
