RUGBY St Andrews sealed the Counties 3 Midlands East (South) title with a 34-10 bonus point win against closest challengers Northampton BBOB.

Elliott Hudson crossed for a hat-trick while Ben DavisonĀ and Tom Muat also touched down as Saints secured the title in style at St. Andrews Road.

Rugby now have an unassailable lead at the top of the Counties 3 Midlands East (South) table with one match left to play this season.

Northampton kicked a penalty to take an early lead as Chris Halcrow responded with a penalty of his own to draw the visitors level.

And Saints scored the first try of the game soon after as Hudson dotted down after sustained pressure on the Northampton line with Halcrow adding the extras.

Rugby suffered a double injury blow when two players required hospital treatment as the home side took advantage to bring the scores level with a converted try under the posts.

However, Saints reclaimed the lead five minutes before the break when Davison squeezed over in the corner.

Rugby ran away with the contest in the second half as Hudson crossed for his second of the game after using his pace to burn past the Northampton defenders and Halcrow converted.

And Hudson completed his hat-trick just before the hour mark as Rugby kept Northampton pinned inside their own half for long periods with quick line speed and crunching tackles.

Saints ran in their fifth try to round off an excellent performance when Muat spotted the smallest of gaps to dive under the posts as Joe Hudson kicked the conversion.

The final whistle sounded soon after to confirm Rugby as league champions to the delight of the club’s new senior coaching team of Ian ‘Spanner’ Spencer, Max Carlton and Alan Parish.

Rugby finish the season at home to Deepings on Saturday, April 6 with kick-off at 3pm at the Hillmorton Grounds.
