RUGBY Welsh secured a first-ever win against local rivals Rugby Lions at first team level with a 34-7 bonus point victory.

Jack Taylor crossed twice for Welsh with Jack Worrall-Soper, Matt Cockman, James McGill and Jamie O’Sullivan-Roche all touching down for the home side at Alwyn Road.

And the result means Welsh now sit third in the Counties 3 Midlands East (South) table, two places above Lions although both teams are on the same number of points.

Welsh made a quick start and took the lead in the first couple of minutes when McGill chased Declan George’s kick ahead before Taylor pounced on the loose ball to score.

And the home side extended their lead as prop Worrall-Soper crashed over the line from close range with McGill kicking the conversion.

Welsh remained on top and their pressure eventually told when Cockman powered over and McGill added the extras.

The hosts picked up where they left off after the break, as McGill scored a stunning individual try, breaking several tackles on his way to dotting down Welsh’s bonus point try.

Taylor scored his second try of the game soon after after he spotted a gap and darted through before Lions eventually crossed for a converted try after creating an overlap.

And Welsh completed the scoring when winger O’Sullivan-Roche showed great strength to power over the line as the home side secured a historic victory.

Welsh are next in action at home to Deepings on Saturday, January 20 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Alwyn Road while Lions host Castle Donington on Saturday, January 27 with kick-off at 2.15pm at Webb Ellis Road.
