Rugby Welsh defeat local rivals AEI

RUGBY Welsh were given a chance to dust off the Christmas cobwebs after the beat local rivals AEI 7-30 in a friendly match on Saturday.

On another wet afternoon, Welsh used the match to give their new and less experienced players a run out, while AEI had a mixture of youth and experience in their side.

The visitors took an early lead when Jack Taylor showed good anticipation to pick up a loose ball and score a well taken try.

AEI responded well and caused Welsh problems with their direct running, however the Welsh defence was strong with Gavin Daniels and Curly performing well in the back row.

Anthony Reynolds increased the lead when Welsh used a simple three quarter move for a try in the corner and on the stroke of half time Barry Burrows scored his first try for the club when he kicked ahead from 40 metres out and scored another well taken try.

The second half saw both sides make mistakes in the poor underfoot conditions, but the contest was always played in good spirit.

Luke Childs increased the Welsh lead when he showed good strength to force his way over from short range before AEI deservedly got on the scoresheet with a converted try of their own.

Both sides made changes to give everyone an opportunity for a game and Welsh sealed their victory with a second well taken try from Reynolds and scrum half Lewis Ramoo completed the scoring with an opportunist try.

Welsh return to league action this weekend when they will hope to gain revenge against Copeswood who narrowly defeated them earlier in the season.
