Rugby Welsh hold nerve to reach last eight

Rugby Editorial 18th Oct, 2018   0

RUGBY Welsh booked their place in the last eight of the Midlands Junior Vase with a 27-21 victory over higher-ranked Aldridge.

Aldridge dominated the possession early doors and opened the scoring from a penalty.

The hosts then extended their advantage with an unconverted try in the corner.

Welsh responded well with Angus Wilson kicking over a penalty and shortly afterwards Anthony Reynolds bundled over in the corner for an unconverted try.

With the score level, Aldridge managed to open a 16-8 lead from another penalty and then an unconverted try.

However, Welsh showed great resilience as Leigh Colledge raced through to score before Jack Taylor ran between the posts immediately from the kick-off. Wilson kicked the extras.

Aldridge then regained the lead with just over ten minutes left with another unconverted try, leaving Welsh one point behind.

With time running out, Welsh skipper Adam Bond forced his way over for the winning try, with Wilson converting to complete the scoring.

Welsh return to Midlands Five West (South) action on Saturday with a trip to Trinity Guild.
