RUGBY UNION: THE BATTLE of two sides gunning for promotion out of the Midlands 5 West (South) went in the favour of Birmingham Civil Service as they beat Rugby Welsh 22-3 on Saturday.
In a hard fought contest the final scoreline gives little indication of the huge effort Welsh put in against their promotion chasing rivals.
Playing uphill in the first half there was little to choose between the sides as both defences nullified the opposition attacks.
Civil Service took the lead with a penalty and a converted try but Welsh narrowed the lead and were well in the contest at half time following a well struck penalty from Guy Shaw
The second half saw Civil Service make some key changes, particularly in the pack and they began to control the game more effectively.
However Welsh continued to compete effectively throughout. Harry Turner was outstanding on the flank putting in numerous tackles whilst Leigh Colledge continued his impressive form in the second row.
James Buckland and Adam Bond were, as always at the heart of the defensive midfield effort whilst George Lowe continues to show excellent skills full impressing with both his defensive and attacking duties.
Civil Service scored two second half tries, one of which was converted to seal their win. Despite some Welsh pressure they were unable to breach the home defence but can be pleased with their efforts against a well drilled outfit.
This Saturday Welsh have a home fixture against Copeswood at Alwyn Road.
