RUGBY UNION: RUGBY Welsh produced a confident and dominant display to secure a 45-5 bonus point victory over a hard-working Trinity Guild outfit in the Midlands 5 West (South) division.
Playing with the benefit of the windy conditions in the first half Welsh struggled in the opening ten minutes as they made some handling errors and misjudged their kicking out of hand.
However as the half progressed, Guy Shaw kicked superbly to put Welsh in good attacking positions and from their first attack Angus Wilson opened the scoring with a penalty. Following pressure on the home line Lorenzo spotted a gap on the blind side to crash over for an unconverted try.
The Welsh game plan was to move the ball away from the forwards and then use their off loading game, and this was used to good effect when Wilson broke from inside his own half and the ball went through several pairs of hands before George Lowe scored a try in the corner.
Towards the end of the half Welsh were in full control and from a five-metre lineout fly half Jack Taylor threw a majestic long pass to winger George Lowe who raced in for his second try, which was converted by Wilson who also kicked a further penalty to give Welsh a 23-point half-time lead.
Welsh knew Guild would try and use the elements in the second half but they refused to give the opposition hope of getting back into the game with some impressive play.
Gareth Hart kept up his try scoring form with a well taken try in the corner and immediately afterwards the impressive Taylor outstripped the home defence to collect his chip ahead to score an unconverted try.
Centre Jason Reynolds making a welcome return from injury bulldozed his way over for another score on the hour mark converted by Wilson.
To Guild’s credit they kept working hard and deserved their unconverted try and only strong Welsh defence prevented a further score late in the game.
Welsh completed the scoring when second row Jamie Roche, who made some typical barnstorming runs in the game, galloped in from 30 metres following another flowing counter attacking move.
An excellent team performance from Welsh who face a crucial game this weekend when they travel to Birmingham Exiles who they are battling with to secure third place in the league.
