Rugby's third string side extend lead at top of Division 11

RUGBY’s third team continued their dominant run of form this summer by cruising to a ten-wicket victory against Southam and extending their lead at the top of the Warwickshire League Division 11 by 44 points.

On a dismal day, Rugby chose to bowl first and were immediately in the wickets when Iffy Mehmood struck without a run on the board.

Opening bowlers Mehmood (8-2-20-2) and Rubans Sugatharubans (6-1-15-4) ripped through Southam’s top order and reduced them to 25 for 6 with Rubans taking his season’s tally to 19 wickets at an average of just 6.21 in the process.

Curtly Street (18) and Andy Crump (19) offered a brief resistance but, once Adam Milsom (4-1-14-3) broke their partnership, the tail offered little fight and Ryan Littlejohn also picked up a wicket as Southam were bowled out for just 76.

In an effort to beat the rain clouds that were looming ominously overhead, captain Tom Mitchell promoted himself to open Rugby’s innings.

The skipper attacked from the outset, finding the boundary with ease and Rugby raced to their target inside nine overs.

Mitchell hit 48 not out as he led the way and he was well supported by Tom Binding (18 not out), as Rugby continued their unbeaten start to the 2015 season.

Rugby’s Premier Division encounter at home to Handsworth leage leaders Handsworth fell vicitim to the rain.

The match lasted just 17.4 overs which included a series of stoppages.

The visitors had won the toss, inserted Rugby on a wet day and Clement Smith removed both opening batsmen early on.

Mike Powell (35) and Matt Ewer (33*) shared a positive partnership, before two wickets fell in the space of three balls, and before another delivery could be bowled, the heavens opened and the match was abandoned.
