Seven triathlons in just two days

RUGBY Triathlon Club’s former captain, Keith Edwards has just completed seven triathlons in a weekend at the London Triathlon.

The 52-year-old triathlete was competing to raise money for Zoe’s Place Baby Hospice and Macmillan Cancer Support.

In total Edwards, who was club captain for seven years and is still an active member, swam 8.25km, cycled 220km and ran 65km over the weekend of August 2 and 3.

“In terms of toughness I think I did underestimate the challenge in terms of the nervous excitement, changing in out of the wet suit and amount of people..” he said.

“The distance was long and tough but I knew I could do that and just had to manage all the rest.

“In terms of the idea, I do a charity event every year or two and saw the London Triathlon as a good opportunity and thought I could fit in six maybe seven.”

There was a total of 14,000 traithletes taking part in the event and Edwards joined in on different races over the Saturday and Sunday.

On day one Edwards completed three sprints, which are 750m swims, 20km bike ride and 5km run, and one Olympic triathlon which is double the length of the sprints.

Then on day two he completed a staggering three Olympic triathlons. Each race there were up to 450 participents all fresh and ready to and towards the end Edwards had to jostle into place after putting a hot body into a cold wet suite.

“My biggest relief was finishing the sixth race as I had 20 minutes to get ready for the next one.

“I had a great support team with my wife Debbie helping take the wet suit to the next point and replenishing my cycling gear with energy bars, nutrients and water and I also had support from the club.”

Edwards’ next challenge is the Helvellyn Triathlon in the Lake District next month.
