Town in training

Rugby Editorial 30th Jun, 2014 Updated: 27th Oct, 2016   0

RUGBY Town have resumed pre-season training ahead of the 2014/15 campaign, which will see them again take their place in the Central Division of the Southern League.

The players were due in for a first session last Saturday – with more planned this week, whilst the club also announced a provisional warm-up fixture schedule ahead of the kick-off of the league season on Saturday, August 9.

Friendlies lined-up include the visit to Butlin Road of Conference North sides Tamworth and Brackley, as well as trips to Racing Club Warwick, Coventry Sphinx and AFC Rushden & Diamonds.

Valley boss Dave Stringer was hoping to welcome back the majority of last year’s squad to training, although he will have the chance to refresh his line-up a little following the departures of regulars Ellis Myles, Nathan Haines and Greg Kaziboni.

Haines is due to sign for local rivals Daventry where he will be joined by Mitchell Piggon who started seven games for Rugby in the middle of last season, and Myles takes the step up to the NPL Premier to move to Stamford – who have also announced the signing of ex-Valley favourite Andy Stevens.

Meanwhile Kaziboni has lined-up a return to Brackley – from whom he joined Town in November 2013, with another who finished last season at Butlin Road – Aaron King – likely to start the new one at Bedford.

However Stringer expects to have defenders Mason Rowley and Alex Austin back in the fold again, with a number of further players being targeted – especially for the critical central midfield area.

Lewis McBride and Craig Kelly should also be back to full fitness, although Sam Belcher is likely to miss the entire campaign due to an operation on his recurring knee injury.

Town’s initial warm-up schedule:

Saturday, July 5: Home – Bell AEI Rugby (3G astro)

Tuesday, July 8: Home – Alvis (3G astro)

Saturday, July 12: Away – R.C. Warwick

Tuesday, July 15: Away – Coventry Sphinx

Saturday, July 19: Home – Tamworth

Saturday, July 27: Home – Brackley

Saturday 2nd August: Away – AFC Rushden & Diamonds

# The club are still seeking a qualified physiotherapist for the coming season. The individual must be able commit to Saturdays for home & away games plus mid-week training.

There is an opportunity for someone to seeking a position as a voluntary video analyst. The role would involve videoing first team games for post-match analysis purposes and also recording player and team statistics.

Anyone interested in either role should contact the club on 01788 866920 or by emailing [email protected].
