Wasteful Rugby fail to take their chances

Rugby Editorial 23rd Feb, 2016 Updated: 27th Oct, 2016   0

IT PROVED to be a case of Rugby & East Warwickshire not taking their chances on Saturday after they fell to a 3-1 defeat at home to North Stafford in the Midland Premier Division.

Rugby dominated the first half and after missing five opportunities at goal, Stafford made them pay by scoring two goals from their only two shots at goal with Matt Abell and Phil Harper getting on the scoresheet to hold a comfortable lead at the break.

The second half ended up being a dog fight and Rugby did not take the game professionally with some players losing their cool.

They did manage to pull a goal back through Szymon Oszyjczyk but Stu Stanway completed the scoring for Stafford.

Rugby were in action again the following day and the return of talisman Tom Morgan helped Rugby claim a point on the road at Harborne.

Morgan’s return boosted the visitors who dominated the first half and Oszyjczyk managed to convert a penalty corner to hold a slender one-goal lead the break.

Rugby’s dominance carried forward into the second half and they had a number of chances to put the game to bed but were unable to convert.

This lack of clinical finishing inevitably came to haunt Rugby as Harborne converted a penalty corner to level the score and take a share of the spoils.

Two lapses in concentration cost Rugby’s second team against Olton after they lost 2-1 to Olton but there was better news for the third team after they beat Northampton Saints 4-2.

A peformance full of commitment, passion and grit saw Rugby match their opponents with Lee Marriott, Gareth Unett and David Odwell (2) scoring the goals.

The fourth team were also celebrating after beating Cannock 1-0 but the fifth team lost by the same scoreline away at West Bridgford.

Warwick’s sixth team fought hard against Northampton Saints and the 4-1 defeat was not a true reflection of their performance, while the seventh string side found themselves on the receiving end of a 8-0 hammering against Northampton Saints.

In the ladies section, Rugby’s first team hammered Coventry & North Warwickshire 5-0 but the second team lost 4-0 against a strong Nuneaton team.
