Family fun to be had around Rugby in the school holidays

A POPULAR summer attraction is now open – and is even more giant than usual.

Wistow Maze has been remodelled in the shape of the BFG (Big Friendly Giant) in honour of Steven Spielberg’s new film of the same name, and to mark the 100th birthday of the character’s creator, author Roald Dahl.

Roald Dahl’s beloved BFG is the star of this year’s Wistow Maze.

The eight-acre Leicestershire labyrinth features three miles of intricate pathways carved through living corn, with high level bridges and towers with panoramic views.

Hidden inside is a Quiz Trail featuring classic children’s books and their authors.

Owner Diana Brooks said: “Roald Dahl had such an impact on children’s imagination with his extraordinary stories and characters, so to celebrate his birth we are highlighting both his work and that of other famous authors of classic children’s books.”

“The challenge is to find 12 quiz boards hidden among the paths of the giant maze, each of which will help to unravel the answer to the quiz trail, while providing interesting facts about the authors and their stories.”

Also on site is a variety of mini mazes, a space hopper track, hoopla, a football shooting game, cafe, garden centre, art gallery and model village.

And on Sunday (July 31) a group of professional body painters and models will hold a free demonstration of their art, inspired by Roald Dahl and Beatrix Potter, and take donations for the Rainbows children’s hospice.

The maze is open 10am-6pm daily until September 4, then weekends only until September 18.

Admission is £6.50 (adults), £5.50 (children) or £22 for a family ticket (two adults, two children).

A SPORTY selection of music, arts, crafts and baking activities are on offer to kids at a Rugby garden centre during the summer holidays, to celebrate the Olympic Games in Rio.

Blooms is offering a series of Olympic-themed crafty events for kids during the summer holidays.

Through activities such as learning how to build a ‘snail racetrack’ tray planter, creating sporty energy bites and decorating carnival masks, the activities will give youngsters a better understanding of the rich culture of Brazil, its traditions and customs – as well as fun ways to stay active in the garden this summer.

Kids can also create mini amazon rainforests and their very own samba shakers, or get busy in the kitchen by making and decorating Olympic-themed giant oat cookies and cupcakes.

The events, which are for children aged between three and eight, must be pre-booked online. Visit www.wyevalegardencentres.co.uk/braziliant-adventures for more information.

WILD and batty adventures await bored kids during the summer holidays at a Warwickshire nature reserve.

Brandon Marsh nature reserve will host a Bat Night on August 26, where families can explore the world of bats, listen out for bat calls using special detectors and try to spot them flying around.

Other activities on offer at Brandon Marsh over the holidays include bug-hunts, den building, pond dipping, creating natural art and playing wildlife games.
