OVER 160 parking tickets have been issued on the same road in Rugby over the last year – prompting a plea to motorists.
Warwickshire County Council (WCC) is asking residents to avoid unsafe and illegal parking on Clifton Road, following the issue of 163 Penalty Charge Notices (PCNs) since February 2024 – 84 of them due to cars parking in bus stops.
The council launched a crackdown on ‘consistently inconsiderate and illegal’ parking at the town centre end of the road just over a year ago following a number of collisions and near-misses – including one in which a bus driver was injured as he got off his bus which had been forced to double park at the designated stop.
And now WCC says parking enforcement is set to increase at the popular shopping area – making it increasingly likely that anyone parking there illegally will be fined.
The council is reminding residents that parking at bus stops is forbidden, and that anyone caught parking in the bus stops along Clifton Road is liable to be issued with a penalty charge notice.
Coun Sarah Feeney, who represents Benn Ward at WCC, said: “Enforcement action is always a last resort. However, the consistently inconsiderate and illegal parking along Clifton Road has left the council with very few options as the actions of a minority of drivers are putting other people’s safety in jeopardy.
“We want people to support the local businesses and will be looking to work with them so that this can be done safely.”
The council’s transport spokesperson Coun Jan Matecki added: “We are committed to ensuring that Warwickshire residents are supported through excellent transport infrastructure. In return, we ask for a commitment to helping the transport network, including the public transport network, to run smoothly.
“Parking in bus stops is against the law and can lead to disruption and, in the recent case, injury. We would kindly ask drivers to consider this, or risk being fined, when visiting the shops on Clifton Road.”
Drivers looking to visit the shops, bars and takeaways at the western end of Clifton Road are advised that legal alternative parking is available nearby in Moultrie Road, Gas Street car park, Railway Terrace car park and John Barford multi-storey car park.
