Once upon a time Taya won a reading award...

Rugby Editorial 9th Jun, 2017   0

ONCE upon a time there was a schoolgirl in the town of Rugby who read aloud so well that she won a national award…

Six year-old Taya Adams has been named as a winner in the reading category of the 2017 Reading Recovery Awards.

A pupil at Boughton Leigh Infant School in Brownsover, Taya was one of hundreds of children who were recorded reading a specially-written story by the author and poet Pie Corbett.

Her rendition of Let Me Come In was chosen as one of the best entries by the judges who were looking for reading which was phrased and fluent and conveyed a child’s enjoyment of and engagement with the story.

Taya is now looking forward to meeting Pie Corbett next month when she travels to London with her family for the prize giving ceremony at the Institute of Education.

She was entered for the competition by her teacher Caroline Graham after making accelerated progress on the school’s Reading Recovery Programme – finishing it six weeks early.

Mrs Graham said: “Taya is a fantastic role model for all children who are learning to read and write. She is now and enthusiastic and independent reader.

“She deserves to win this award for all her hard work and determination whilst on the school’s Reading Recovery Programme,”

The Reading Recovery Awards are organised by University College London’s International Literacy Centre which promotes literacy education for children aged two to 13.
